Escape the menacing glitch

Peeb Adventures is a free adventure video game wherein you must escape a creepy glitchy world. Developed by Johnny a.k.a. Feverdream Johnny, this 3D indie game is a retro PS1-style platformer that features nostalgic gameplay mechanics and graphics mixed in with surreal horror elements.

Similar to Still Ridge and An Outcry, Peeb Adventures was created for the Haunted PS1 Demo Disk 2021 game jam. As a demo, it lets you explore some unique areas while on the hunt for secret worlds and easter eggs. It also features accessibility settings—such as color-blind assist and high-contrast graphics—and supports controllers.

The comedic adventures of Peeb

In Peeb Adventures, you play as the eponymous character—a short and stout white creature that can shoot a handy grappling hook. Story-wise, there’s no clear direction in your adventure. You’re simply prompted to try out the controls and explore around. However, Peeb keeps encountering strange “glitches” in this pixelated world that seem out of place—prompting him to find a way out.

The controls are easy enough since the game plays out like a proper PS1 title and incorporates its in-game tutorial into NPC dialogue. You primarily move Peeb around to solve puzzles and platforming dilemmas by making good use of his hook. It pays to explore thoroughly as there are numerous hidden passages and easter eggs you can discover. The different worlds you’ll go through each have their own challenges.

The gameplay itself is pretty fun since you can do Spiderman-esque swings. Plus, encounters with Orbo the NPC can be hilarious at times. The atmosphere of the world definitely hammers in on the surreal creepiness, however. The vibrant colors can be overwhelming so the special settings are of huge help. There’s not a lot of issues here aside from the lack of movement input sensitivity for the analog control.

A great Haunted PS1 title

All in all, Peeb Adventures delivers a well-put demo of what to expect in this PS1-like adventure. While there are some wrong movement inputs when using an analog control stick, the gameplay is still quite engaging and even nostalgic for platformer fans. Additionally, the inclusion of accessibility settings makes it a much more comfortable game for all. This is a highly recommended horror indie game to try out.
